The new home of the Adam Smith Business School
On Monday, 4 December 2023, we were delighted to officially open the new Adam Smith Business School and Postgraduate Teaching Hub. This multidisciplinary space is the first facility on campus designed for students of the University’s graduate programmes and provides spaces to study, collaborate and network.
The building is also the new home for the Adam Smith Business School. Inspired by its namesake Adam Smith, the School is committed to being an Engaged, Enlightened and Entrepreneurial Business School for its partners locally, nationally and globally. It has been designed to support the School’s analytical, entrepreneurial and sustainable mission while facilitating richer interactions and collaborations with key stakeholders and partners.
To officially open the building, we were honoured to welcome Professor Cecilia Rouse, incoming president of the Brookings Institution, Katzman-Ernst Professor in Economics and Education at Princeton University and former Chair of the Council of Economic Advisers at the White House.
Professor Rouse received an Honorary Doctorate at the University earlier that day and joined a panel session entitled 'Learning from Adam Smith – the Potential of Enlightened, Engaged, Entrepreneurial Business Schools'. Professor Rouse was joined by Professor in Organisational Studies, Kat Riach, Professor of the History of Political Thought, Craig Smith, President of Scottish Women in Business & Fou
nder and Managing Director of Dechomai, Bayile Adeoti, and Stephen Coleman OBE, Co-Director, CEO and Co-founder of Codebase.
Joining the panel was Head of the Adam Smith Business School, Professor Eleanor Shaw. While discussing the new space, Professor Shaw said, “The layout and design of this new space will really help us achieve the vision that we have for the Adam Smith Business School. This is an open-doors building so we can invite our research partners and organisations in as well as translate our knowledge and understanding to the world outside.
“It is our hope that graduates of the Adam Smith Business School go into the world not only with a great academic discipline, but a real understanding of what it means to be a global citizen and a commitment to give back to the communities that they work and live in.”
This opening marks a milestone in both the Adam Smith Tercentenary celebrations and the transformation of the Gilmorehill campus. Over the last ten years, your world-changing giving has helped to deliver the most significant development of the University estate since the creation of the Gilbert Scott Building. This legacy will last for generations to come and will support our students, staff and partners to continue making a positive impact here in Glasgow and around the world.
