We’re halfway there
We’ve reached a major milestone in the construction of our £113 million research facility.
A topping out ceremony in early March marked the completion of the five-story concrete frame, and the halfway point in construction.
Opening in 2021, the research hub will provide state-of-the-art facilities and inspiring spaces where world-changing research can thrive. It will be home to a unique interdisciplinary community of researchers working across five themes:
- Creative Economies & Cultural Transformation
- Digital Chemistry
- International Development
- Quantum and Nanotechnology
- Technologies Touching Life.
The five theme areas will bring together a wide range of capabilities to tackle global challenges, including effective treatments for Alzheimer's; working with partners in the Global South to create more sustainable, equitable societies; and using quantum technology to revolutionise medical imaging.
The ground floor of the building will be publicly accessible, with café and exhibition spaces fostering engagement with research partners and the wider community.

The Research Hub will be the second building delivered through the University of Glasgow’s £1 billion Campus Development Programme.
The James McCune Smith Learning Hub is scheduled to open in September 2020, and will provide innovative teaching, study and social space for more than 2,500 students.
Named in recognition and celebration of the American doctor and abolitionist who graduated from Glasgow with an MD in 1837, the £90m development will revolutionise the way we deliver learning and teaching and provide a world-class facility for future generations of students.
