Chinese Language Courses

All classes will take place in person on the main Gilmorehill campus.
Classes will run for eight weeks, with the timings as follows:
Tuesdays 6.00pm - 8.00pm
Thursdays 6.00pm - 8.00pm
Saturdays 10.00am - 12.00pm
The total course cost is £135, which is a total of sixteen hours of tuition and includes a free set of textbooks (textbook, exercise workbook and character book) for the Beginner levels.
We will also be running a free Chinese language corner at 12.15pm - 1.15pm on Saturdays after the classes. All levels are welcome to attend these sessions to practice their language skills.

BEGINNER LEVEL 1-3 SUMMARY
This Chinese beginners’ course is designed for those with little to no previous knowledge of Chinese language. The course will introduce students to the basic features of the Chinese language including Pinyin (the Chinese phonetics system), basic knowledge about Chinese characters, and explore elements of Chinese culture. Meanwhile, the course will introduce students to 343 Chinese Characters, 352 Chinese words and expressions, and related grammatical items.
Beginner 1
What you will learn
- introduction to Chinese phonetics and pronunciation; Pinyin, use of four tones
- introduction to Chinese characters; have a basic knowledge of strokes, some radicals and common components, character structure and stroke order, recognition of common characters, and ability to practice handwriting simple characters
- introduction to common Chinese words and expressions; basic Chinese classroom expressions, simple Chinese sentence patterns, self-introduction and greetings, basic conversation, shopping and bargaining
- develop basic understanding about Chinese culture; Chinese surnames and given names

INTERMEDIATE LEVEL 1-3 SUMMARY
This Chinese intermediate course is designed for those with previous experience and knowledge at the beginner course level, such as Pinyin (the Chinese phonetics system), Chinese characters, basic sentence patterns etc. The course will introduce 380 new Chinese Characters, 430 new Chinese words and expressions, related grammatical items and Chinese culture. This course also has 44 functional topics, which are useful for communicating more freely.
Intermediate 1
What you will learn
- review pronunciation of Pinyin and increased ability to recognise different characters through Pinyin
- be able to recognise and typewrite new characters with reduced dependence on Pinyin
- acquire new Chinese words and expressions which are related to more specific and functional topics
- acquire increased knowledge of elementary Chinese sentence patterns which are more useful in the daily communication
- develop elementary understanding about Chinese culture (e.g, the image of the dog in the Chinese language; traditional Chinese greetings; importance of the zodiac animals etc.)
- be able to communicate about more varied topics (e.g pets, body, past experiences, new changes and recent plans, personal likes and dislikes, tourist attractions in China, how to wish someone a Happy Birthday, practical language for travel in China)

What you will learn

- acquire new Chinese words and expressions which are related to more specific and functional topics
- increased knowledge of useful syntactic elements; be able to express more complex sentences instead of several simple sentences on the same topic
- develop elementary understanding about Chinese culture (e.g, the idioms with four characters, traditional replies to compliments)
- be able to communicate about more varied topics (e.g, the weather, seasons and climate, direction and location, urban and rural areas, adjusting plans and solving problems, narrating a specific sequence of events, and taking transportation in China)

UPPER INTERMEDIATE LEVEL 1-3 SUMMARY
This Chinese upper intermediate course is designed for those with previous experience and knowledge at the intermediate course level, and students should be able to communicate freely about basic topics taught in the beginner and intermediate levels. The course will introduce 446 new words and expressions, some complex sentence structures and more Chinese culture. Meanwhile, the course could help text reading ability, extract key information from text more quickly and accurately and output own ideas and opinions accurately.
Upper Intermediate 1
What you will learn
- review the Chinese phonetic system, practice writing unknown Chinese characters according to the pronunciation
- be able to read many Chinese characters in text without the use of Pinyin
- acquire 149 new Chinese words and develop related expressions based on these words
- increased knowledge of useful Chinese sentence patterns to express meaning more accurately
- ability to communicate more advanced topics (e.g, seasons and nature, traditional birthday customs in China, multicultural issues)
- gain a more nuanced understanding about Chinese language learning, especially the difference between Putonghua and dialects
- begin to acquire text reading skills, with ability to read texts more autonomously

ADVANCED LEVEL SUMMARY
This Chinese advanced course is designed for those who have a higher proficiency level of Chinese. It is designed for those who are able to communicate fluently, understand well known common characters and write basic characters in daily life. Based on Textbook 4, this course is tailored to students needs, with discussions on topics that interest the group. The course will introduce local pronunciation and intonation, more new advanced words and useful expressions, more in-depth knowledge of Chinese culture, and improved text narrative ability.

What you will learn
- improved daily communication similar to native speakers, with a focus on practising intonation and pauses in sentences
- improved ability to write Chinese characters, and develop understanding of cultural meanings behind the creation of characters (e.g, pictographic, indicative, associative, picto-phonetic)
- develop strong listening and speaking skills, with ability to reiterate concepts and conversations in own words
- learn more advanced words, especially function words and affixes
- ability to distinguish differences between spoken Chinese and written Chinese expressions
- increased opportunity to practice discussion skills and ability to express own views
- develop deeper understanding about Chinese culture (e.g, attitudes towards work, Chinese family relationships)
- improve text narrative ability, with ability to tell a story in chronological order

This course is tailored to the topic interests of the student group and the teaching resources used are varied. You will have the opportunity to study a variety of texts and reading materials, including Contemporary Chinese Level 4 textbook set, texts from Chinese media and literature.
