Glasgow and Europe

The University of Glasgow is proudly European, welcoming students from across Europe. As a globally minded university, we are committed to working with our European partners on collaborative research, teaching and learning opportunities, and staff and student mobility. 

We remain European by heritage and by design and continue to be a welcoming and inclusive home for all our European and international staff, students, colleagues and allies.

European research

We are stronger when we look beyond our boundaries and combine our ideas with those of others. As our closest neighbours, we work with researchers in Europe and we have so far received 212 awards from Horizon 2020, with total funding awarded of around €116M. The UK and the EU and reached agreement on full UK participation in the new Horizon Europe programme (2021 – 2027), Glasgow's researchers have the opportunity to work with more partners and win more research funding from the EU than ever before.

European alliances and networks

We welcome the chance to further engage with all our network partners. The University of Glasgow is a founding member of the Guild comprising of twenty one of Europe’s most distinguished research-intensive universities. In February 2021, University of Glasgow joined CIVIS - a European University alliance as an associate member.

Student study

As a result of the UK leaving the European Union there will be changes for our EU students. Our dedicated international team are working hard to support our students from across the EU who are, and will continue to be, an integral part of our diverse University community. 

Mobility in Europe

We currently have over 120 mobility partners in Europe and the Erasmus funding granted in 2020 will be available to students going on European exchanges and traineeships until May 2023. The UK Government has announced that the UK will no longer participate in the Erasmus+ mobility programme. The Turing Scheme is the UK government’s global programme to study and work abroad. The scheme provides funding for outgoing international opportunities in education and training across the world.

Delivering degrees with European partners

The University of Glasgow has been part of the success and continued growth of the European Commission’s prestigious Erasmus Mundus programme for 10 years and currently nine Erasmus Mundus European Joint Masters degrees offered in partnership with Glasgow. We are open to continuing to work with partners around the world in the new Erasmus Mundus funding round (2021−27). 

European staff

Over 14% of our international staff community are from the European Economic Area. We value the expertise they offer in research, teaching and administration. Throughout the uncertainty of the Brexit process we have worked closely to support our European colleagues and continue to welcome new staff to come work with us.
