Professor Sir Anton Muscatelli (Keynote speaker)
Professor Sir Anton Muscatelli, Principal and Vice-Chancellor, University of Glasgow
Sir Anton has been Principal and Vice-Chancellor, University of Glasgow, since October 2009. From 2007-2009 he was Principal and Vice-Chancellor of Heriot-Watt University. An economist, his research interests are monetary economics, central bank independence, fiscal policy, international finance and macroeconomics. Prior to 2007 he held various roles at the University of Glasgow including Vice-Principal - Strategy, Budgeting and Advancement (2004-07) and Daniel Jack Professor of Political Economy (1994-2007).
Sir Anton was Chair (2016-21) of Scotland’s First Minister’s Standing Council on Europe, a non-political group providing expert advice to Scottish ministers on Scotland’s relationship with the EU. He was a member of the Scottish Government’s Council of Economic Advisers 2015-21 and advised them on the recently launched National Strategy for Economic Transformation. He was an adviser to the House of Commons Treasury Select Committee on fiscal and monetary policy between 2007-10.
From 2017-20 he was Chair of the Russell Group of Universities, and between 2012-19 was a Board member of the Scottish Funding Council which provides funding and oversight of Scotland’s Colleges and Universities. He was a member of the Steering Group on the Stern Review of the UK Research Excellence Framework, 2016, and is currently a member of the advisory group for Sir Paul Nurse’s Review of the UK’s Research, Development and Innovation Organisational Landscape.
Sir Anton was knighted in 2017 for services to economics and higher education and was awarded the honour of Knight Commander (Commendatore) by the Republic of Italy in 2008 for contributions to higher education and economic science. He has held visiting appointments in numerous Universities around the world, and has an honorary doctorate from McGill University (Canada).
Rachel Sandison (Chair)
Rachel Sandison, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, External Engagement & Vice Principal, External Relations, University of Glasgow
Rachel is responsible for leading the University of Glasgow’s strategy for external engagement covering an integrated portfolio of Marketing and Communications; Brand and Reputation Management; Student Recruitment; Admissions; International Policy and Partnerships; Widening Access and Lifelong Learning; Development and Alumni Relations; and Civic Engagement. Rachel is also the University’s Refugee & Asylum Seeker Champion.
Rachel is the University’s Universitas 21 network Senior Leader, a Board member of the University’s European network, The Guild, and the University lead for the CIVIS European University Alliance, thereby supporting the activity of a global group of research-intensive universities.
Rachel is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Marketing and currently a Global Trustee of CASE, whilst also contributing to several sector advisory boards both at home and overseas.
Professor Jenny Dixon
Professor Jenny Dixon, Provost of Universitas 21
Jenny is the Provost of Universitas 21, a global higher education network of 28 members spanning 18 countries. She oversees the strategic direction of the network, working closely with Presidents /Vice-Chancellors and Senior Leaders.
Jenny works with the U21 secretariat to deliver a distinctive portfolio of programmes for members focussing on student experience, researcher engagement and educational innovation.
The overall mission of the network, established 25 years ago, is to strengthen internationalisation and collaboration, sharing expertise and mutual understanding across diverse regions, cultures and traditions.
Professor Antoine Cazé
Professor Antoine Cazé, Vice-Président Europe/Vice-President for European Affairs, Université Paris Cité
A former student of the École Normale Supérieure (class of 1982), Antoine Cazé holds a PhD in American Literature (Université Paris Diderot, 1992). His dissertation was on Emily Dickinson of whose work he remains an internationally renowned specialist.
In 1999, Prof. Cazé defended his Habilitation à diriger des recherches (Université Paris 3 Sorbonne Nouvelle), with a second dissertation on « Lyricism and Formalism in American Poetry ». The study of post-lyric poetry and the relationships between personal voice and impersonal composition procedures is one of the core interests of his research in American poetry. He has written some 85 research articles on American literature, and two books on poets John Ashbery and Hilda Doolittle.
Between 1992 and 2008, Antoine Cazé was Maître de Conférences then Professor at the University of Orléans, where he created and ran an MA Program in Editorial Translation.
In 2008, he was appointed Professor of American Literature and Translation at Université Paris Diderot (today Université Paris Cité). He runs the MA Program in Literary Translation in the English and American Studies Department.
A professional literary translator since 1999, he has published over 30 translations, including new translations of Jack London and Scott Fitzgerald. He was awarded the 2005 Maurice-Edgar Coindreau Prize for the best translation of an American book, and the Laure Bataillon Prize in 2014. He was an elected board member of ATLAS (Assises de la Traduction Littéraire en Arles), as well as a member of several expert committees at the Centre National du Livre (Ministry of Culture).
From 2015 to 2019, Antoine Cazé served as Vice-President for International Relations at Université Paris Diderot. Since the merger of Paris Diderot with Paris Descartes in 2019 to create Université Paris Cité, he has been in charge of developing the European University Alliance Circle U. He is currently the Vice-President for Strategy and International Relations at Université Paris Cité.
Dr Joanna Newman
Dr Joanna Newman, Chief Executive and Secretary General, Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU)
ACU is an international organisation dedicated to building a better world through higher education, with more than 500 member universities in over 50 countries. Joanna is the first female Secretary General of the ACU, and in this role also directs the administration of the UK government’s three main international scholarship programmes – Chevening, Commonwealth, and Marshall Scholarships – as well as the multilateral Queen Elizabeth Commonwealth Scholarships.
Joanna’s career has been in the service of British and international higher education. Before joining the ACU in 2017, she was Vice-Principal (International) at King’s College London, where she was instrumental in forging new international research and teaching collaborations. Her previous roles include Director of the UK Higher Education International Unit (now known as Universities UK International), where she led the development of a UK-wide international education strategy; and Head of Higher Education at the British Library, where she commissioned the Google Generation report, the first study of Generation Y researchers.
Joanna serves on a number of boards, including the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network’s Leadership Council, the High-level Advisory Group for Mission 4.7, and as a lay member of the Council of Cardiff University. She is a Senior Research Fellow in History at King’s College London. Her most recent publication is Nearly the New World: The British West Indies and the Flight from Nazism, 1933-1945. In 2014, Joanna was awarded an MBE in recognition of her work promoting British higher education internationally.
Dr Mychailo Wynnyckyj
Dr Mychailo Wynnyckyj, is Associate Professor, National University 'Kyiv-Mohyla Academy' (Sociology Department and Business School), and is the university’s Academic Development Officer
Until recently he served as Head of the Secretariat of Ukraine’s National Agency for Higher Education Quality Assurance, and prior to that as Advisor to three of Ukraine’s Ministers of Education (2015-2019).
Originally from Canada, Mychailo has lived permanently in Kyiv for almost two decades. He was awarded a PhD in 2004 from the University of Cambridge (U.K.).
His book “Ukraine’s Maidan, Russia’s War: A Chronicle and Analysis of the Revolution of Dignity” was published in 2019.
