University of Lille, France
The University of Lille, a multidisciplinary university of excellence at the heart of Northern Europe, boasts an outstanding cultural and scientific heritage that is etched into the Hauts-de-France Region’s history. The university’s founding dates back to 1562 as University of Douai and it became the University of Lille in 1887, with Louis Pasteur as the first Dean of Science. Now, with more than 67,000 students, it is the largest French university and one of the largest French-speaking universities in the world. Across the university over 20 degrees are taught fully in English. There are also French classes for students wishing to improve their language skills while studying.
Lille is France's fifth largest metropolitan area and fourth urban area. It is located to the country's north, on the Deûle River, near the border with Belgium. Capital of the Hauts-de-France région, Lille may be France's most underrated metropolis. Recent decades have seen the country's fourth-largest city (by greater urban area) transform from an industrial centre into a glittering cultural and commercial hub. Highlights include its enchanting old town with magnificent French and Flemish architecture, renowned art museums, stylish shopping, outstanding cuisine and a nightlife scene bolstered by 67,000 university students.
