JANUARY 2023

On behalf of the University of Glasgow, a belated Happy New Year to all of our friends and partners and welcome to our first Connect newsletter of 2023!

As the University of Glasgow’s Sanctuary Champion, I am delighted that at the end of 2022, the University was officially awarded University of Sanctuary status in recognition of our commitment to supporting forced migrants from across the world.

At the University, we have always aimed to be an inclusive and welcoming campus where every member of our Team UofG community feels safe, respected and supported to fulfil their "world-changing" potential. As a values-based organisation, we must always hold ourselves up to the highest standards and being awarded University of Sanctuary status is a testament to our commitment to promoting fairness and equity of opportunity for all.

However, while this recognition is incredibly welcome, as a University of Sanctuary, we cannot simply reflect on the activities delivered to date but must hold ourselves accountable for delivering our ambitious plans for the future, and you have my promise that we will continue to work alongside our partners across the HE sector, government and NGOs, to offer effective and meaningful support to asylum seekers and refugees who choose to make Glasgow their home.

Best wishes,
Rachel Sandison
Deputy Vice-Chancellor (External Engagement)
