ARC in Facts & Figures
The ARC will bring world leading researchers together, breaking down organisational silos and facilitating collaboration.
- £116.55m flagship research building at the heart of the University’s west end campus.
- Capacity for over 1,800 people in the building.
- Is BIG - 6 floors, over 100m long, 43m at its widest point and measures 24m to the top of the building.
- Has approx. 3580m2 of lab space in a 16,000m2 This roughly equates to ¼ of the space being STEM labs.
- There are approximately 550 desks in the ARC. A mixture of Principal Investigator offices, open plan and shared offices.
- The atrium and exhibition space is approx. 700m.
- Level 2 can accommodate up to 1118 people.
- Has 20% expansion space available to allow collaborations to grow and expand.
- Will provide space for UofG’s PGRs cohort. Level 2 includes a range of spaces including a PGR training suite for up to 60 students. On level 3, 50 desks with docking stations will be available for PGRs alongside breakout space for informal meetings/group discussions.
- The main seminar room on level 2 can take up to 140 delegates.
- Will provide approximately 50 bookable seminar and meeting rooms, providing some much needed space for colleagues across the University.
- Will be home to one of the UK’s largest XR/VR suites – capable of accommodating up to 30 people the 6m x 18m space can be customised - three modules of 6x6m, or larger modules of 6x12m, or 6x18m.
- The Enterprise Zone on level 2 will provide space for up to 30 student start-up companies, with dedicated advisors the space will help students develop their ideas and build an entrepreneurial community.
- The Multi-Use space provides a flexible and interpretive area for around 30 people to move and interact. The space has been designed to support a range of activities, smaller exhibitions and creative practice.
- With eight formal meeting spaces of various sizes the ARC offers flexible space for a range of events, including a large seminar room with seating for 140 people, sub-dividable into two spaces of 70 and including large screens and AV/IT facilities. There will also be a smaller seminar room with 60 seats, which can be subdivided into two 30-seater rooms, in addition to informal seating and smaller breakout spaces.
- Provides parents and carers with publicly accessible baby change facilities and baby feeding spaces.

Supporting collaboration
- Agile working is encouraged in the ARC, which is equipped with many open plan areas.
- Provides flexible spaces for researchers to collaborate.
- Will provide space for training the next generation of experts in artificial social intelligence by housing SOCIAL, the UKRI Centre for Doctoral Training in Socially Intelligent Artificial Agents.
- Will provide approximately 50 bookable seminar and meeting rooms across the building.
- Studio 1 on level 2 can accommodate up to 20 people and has been designed to support visually engaging, creative activity. This could range from pop-up maker activities to kit-building/beta testing, to art projects, to showcase activities.
Built to support sustainability
- Promoting sustainable travel - there’s storage for 125 bikes and 4 showers in the ARC.
- Has 4 ‘green roofs’ with a mix of seeds and wildflowers.
- Is a BREEAM rated building. BREEAM is the world’s leading sustainability assessment method for masterplanning projects, infrastructure and buildings. The ARC is on track to achieve Excellent rating.
- Supports sustainable construction, the building has re-used demolition material from the former Western Infirmary, installed rainwater harvesting tanks under the loading bay, installed PV panels as well as green roofs.
