I am currently working on a project to determine the effect selection for nematode resistance has on MHC class II diversity in sheep, supervised by Prof. Mike Stear and Dr Louise Matthews. This includes both developing a mathematical model of nematode infection in sheep, and the modelling of selection for reduced faecal egg counts based on data obtained for six MHC loci in sheep. The project aims to test the hypothesis that such selective breeding will reduce allelic diversity in the MHC, with the concern being that loss of alleles may increase susceptibility to other infections.
