Slide-less Lectures and the Challenge of Peer Instruction in Large Classes

As many lecturers have experienced in recent years, growing class sizes makes it ever more difficult to deliver an individual and tailored learning experience for students. In my own experience, peer instruction has been very successful at providing more engaging lecture formats and encouraging participation during class. However, there may be an upper limit when peer instruction breaks down and social anxiety prohibits widespread participation. To try a new technique to engage students, I am redeveloping my lecture slides for my third year class in a new powerpoint-free format. I am hoping that this alternative approach will continue to support discussion and individual learning without requiring direct participation. During this talk, I will review my experiences with peer instruction, describe my motivations for the new content design, and show a side-by-side comparison of a typical lecture.
