What kind of mental state is episodic memory? I defend the claim that it is, in key part, imagining the past. To remember a past episode is to imagine how things were, in a way guided by one’s past experience of that episode. I defend this account against some obvious objections, and explore some of its consequences for the epistemology of episodic memory.
