AI Ethics, Inclusion & Society: Our Massive Open Online Course

AI ethics resources
Out of the 2024 symposium has grown something we’re especially proud of, an online course that shifts the focus from grand headlines about AI to the everyday questions of fairness, voice and responsibility. We’ve called it AI Ethics, Inclusion & Society, a three-week course now live on FutureLearn.
Together, learners explore how ethical theories, such as virtue ethics and normative ethics, connect to AI design, how bias can creep in through data and algorithms, and how AI is already reshaping education, healthcare, and environmental futures. For better and for worse.
What makes this course especially exciting is that it was co-designed with student interns who asked sharp questions, challenged our assumptions and pushed us to notice things we might otherwise have missed. As Abbie, one of our interns, reflected:
It was really exciting to be part of an initiative that not only centred on AI but around AI ethics. It’s something we should all be talking about more. The internship kept me busy and inspired, and even pushed me to look at Master’s courses in AI!
Learners have been just as enthusiastic, telling us:
Academically rigorous. Really thoughtful examples and activities that encourage ethical learning!
I loved Week 1. I had to pace myself because there are so many avenues to pursue.
I came into this course only having heard the negative side of AI: job losses, replacing creativity. It’s been good to get a broader scope and hopefully this additional knowledge will help me in employment with companies that use AI.
So far, more than 560 learners have joined, posting over 800 discussions, with overwhelmingly positive feedback indicating that the course provided them with new knowledge and exceeded their expectations.
The launch of AI Ethics, Inclusion & Society grows out of the same spirit as the Lovelace-Hodgkin Symposium, creating spaces where different voices can meet to question, challenge and reimagine AI together.
If you’ve ever wished the discussion around AI ethics were less hype and more humanity, this course might be exactly what you’ve been looking for. You can join here.
