Biography

Dr Dan Fisher is a political geographer with an interest in borders, processes of asylum determination and refugee integration. His recent work explores the governance practices of refugee integration and the decision-making processes of forced migrants. As part of his previous role with the UNESCO Chair for Refugee Integration through the Languages and the Arts, Dan worked on an evaluation of Scotland’s ‘New Scots Refugee Integration Strategy’. His current work also includes analysing judicial determinations of asylum appeals.

Dan has engaged widely with the policy community, particularly through his work assisting the drafting the third iteration of the New Scots Strategy. He has also co-organised numerous stakeholder engagement events concerning refugee integration in Scotland, published open access research reports (including a report on asylum appeals in the UK with the Public Law Project), and contributed research to Scottish Parliament debates and the UK Government's Home Affairs Committee's Inquiry into Immigration Detention in the UK. He is also a regular participant at the Scottish Government's Cross-Party Working Group on Migration.

Prior to joining the University of Glasgow, Dan was employed at the James Hutton Institute, where he conducted research on the challenges of implementing socially inclusive Green Infrastructure in the United Kingdom. He has also worked at the University of Exeter, where he researched asylum appeal proceedings in Europe as part of the ASYFAIR project (led by Professor Nick Gill).

Dan completed his PhD at the University of Edinburgh. His thesis critically engaged assemblage theory as a means of prising open the everyday workings (and failings) of border control. Ethnographic data from field sites in Spain, Morrocco and the UK were used to trace performances of border control and tactics of resistance.
