XR teaching lab at Partick Burgh Hall
The University of Glasgow XR teaching lab at Partick Burgh Hall (PBH) is the University's dedicated space for immersive teaching and learning. In operation since September 2021, it is designed to minimise technical set-up for sessions, ease troubleshooting, and to provide a 'white glove' service to UofG colleagues exploring XR for teaching and training.
The lab spans 12m x 12m and consists of 15 learner stations. Each station consists of a high-end PC, a touch screen monitor, mixed reality headset, a tactile mat, and a UV-C sanitisation box. Click here to find out more about the hardware available.
A central seminar space allows for group discussion.
The XR teaching lab at PBH has proven to be adaptable in a range of different use cases across the University of Glasgow and beyond, including (but not limited to) the following courses which make use of applications developed at UofG:
- Microbiology and Immunology (Battling Infection)
- Molecular Methods (Disease Diagnostics Lab)
- Scottish Literature (Burns Beyond Reality)
- Museum Studies (Museums in the Metaverse)
- Information Studies (Gutenberg Press)
- Physics (Introduction to Projectile Motion)
- Quantitative Methods in Social and Political Science (Seeing Data Landscapes)
Click here for a full list of applications, and see Case Studies below to find out what impact XR interventions have helped deliver.
The University is part of Meta's Meta for Education program which aims to explore the benefits of immersive technology for learning and teaching. As one of few select institutions invited to the exclusive beta program, the University helped shape the development of Meta’s education platform, contributing practical insights gained from teaching with XR.
The XR teaching lab supports LTS projects that investigate immersive technology.
The lab is available for bookings to all UofG staff via Central Timetabling. Technical support staff will be present for each booking to ensure smooth functioning of the equipment.
