Our first webinar, March events and Food Futures winners announcement
What Happened in March
We were delighted to start the month with our first SCAF webinar on ‘Sustainable Food Choices’. We heard about the psychology of communications and sustainable food choices from Maddie Sinclair and Dr Tess Davis from the University of Glasgow, who drew from their 2023 open access paper and outlined the implications of their research for policy. The webinar recording was posted on slack. Join the SCAF slack community here.
For early career researchers interested in nutrition, SCAF and the AGEing and Nutrient Sensing (AGENTs) Network hosted a collaborative two-day workshop at the Advanced Research Centre (ARC) at the University of Glasgow on ‘Nutrient Sensing, Ageing and Career Development’. This interdisciplinary series of talks, discussions and presentations provided an important space for engagement, to showcase early career research, and to facilitate future collaborative work.
The University of Glasgow hosted Dr Benoit Chassaing from L’Institut Pasteur Pasteur Institute and the Cochin-Port-Royal AP-HP Hospital, who spoke to SCAF about microbiota and interindividual variability. The audience was incredibly diverse, with members joining from across nutrition, geoscience, chemistry, microbiology and engineering departments.
For #WorldFoodDay in 2023, we invited young people between the ages of 7 and 16 to send us their visions for a better food future, and to showcase their vision in a poster or drawing. After receiving many talented entries, we were thrilled to announce the winners of our Food Futures Competition. Marlene (11) and Caitlin (9) won joint first prize in the 7-11 Judges’ Prize category, and Gemma (14) won first prize from the 12-16 group. SCAF members chose their favourite submissions: Hillhead Primary (8-11) and Gemma (14). You can view these winning entries and all submitted artworks on our WordPress website. Winners have been announced on social media [X (formerly Twitter), LinkedIn, Instagram, Facebook] – please join us in celebrating their contributions!
