Research Themes and Workstreams
The Scottish Alliance for Food is centred around key research themes and workstreams:
- Theme 1: Mapping the Food System
- Theme 2: Innovation-led Food Systems Research
- Theme 3: Culture, Heritage & Behaviour
- Theme 4: Food Security, Environment & Community
- Workstream 1: Academy of Citizens
- Workstream 2: Food Systems

Mapping the Food System
This theme aims to facilitate the establishment of new datasets and technologies to create an accessible and reusable Scottish food system.

Culture, Heritage & Behaviour
This theme will focus on creating synergistic behaviour change among food system stakeholders to transition into a future-proof food system that honours Scottish food culture and heritage.

Food Security, Environment & Community
This theme will facilitate research on increasing access to healthful food, reducing food insecurity, considering dignity, community cohesion and the right to sustainable food.

Innovation-led Food Systems Research
This theme will explore the complex challenges that ultra food processing places on health, safety and the identity of our food industry.

Academy of Citizens
The Academy of Citizens (AoC) is open to anyone living in Scotland (or with ties to Scotland) who wants to contribute to shaping the future of food. The AoC is an integral part of the SCAF membership, and brings together members of the public with researchers and practitioners to share perspectives and explore questions about how to make food systems more sustainable, healthy, and equitable. Everyone has knowledge and experience to contribute, and all are welcome to take part.
