Teaching and studying at SCENE
Come and visit the Scottish Centre for Ecology and the Natural Environment, in the heart of the Trossachs, on the bonnie banks of Loch Lomond. Our research station is dedicated to understanding and preserving the natural world through scientific research and education.
Our purpose-built facilities cater to a variety of research projects and provide hands-on learning for students and researchers. We also cater for workshops, small conferences, away-days, and writing retreats- your group can join us for the day or use our overnight facilities. Our station is easily reached by car from Glasgow and offers state-of-the-art laboratories, a conference room, and a lecture hall/dining area with a stunning view of the loch for groups of up to 43 people. Education Opportunities
SCENE’s facilities bring cutting-edge techniques to fieldwork, and develop our ability to provide a top-quality, hands-on learning experience. This combination is difficult to find elsewhere in Europe. Beyond its benefit to undergraduate and postgraduate students.
Our unique location gives immediate access to a variety of habitats allowing for an array of educational opportunities. SCENE can provide access to spectacular examples of a range of habitat types for research and teaching purposes. These include lakes, streams, woodland, moor and mountain, small mammal sampling to electrofishing and even deep lake/loch sampling we can cater for a wide variety of groups and educational opportunities.
Who can use SCENE facilities?
While our research facilities are available for visiting universities and international researchers, the Harry Slack Teaching Building is available for anyone to book. Visiting user groups run teaching and learning exercises of a few days to up to two weeks in subjects including terrestrial ecology, limnology, invertebrate sampling, the ecology of small mammals, freshwater biology, wildlife management, fisheries management, soil science, environmental monitoring, field sampling techniques, geology and a host of other environmental topics. You can also book the facilities for a writing retreat, workshop or meeting.' Just to highlight that about half of our bookings are for groups that do no field or lab work.
