Professor Manuel Salmeron-Sanchez
Professor Manuel Salmeron-Sanchez is Head of the School of Engineering at the University of Glasgow. Before joining the University of Glasgow in 2013, he was full Professor at the Technical University of Valencia and Visiting Professor at the Georgia Institute of Technology (2010). In 2012, he was seconded to Abengoa Research – a research company within Abengoa, an international company with +20000 employees – to set up the materials research division.
Manuel has > 140 publications in leading international journals and has been Principal Investigator in a number of national and international grants. He was the holder of an ERC Consolidator grant and has been awarded two ERC Proof of Concept grant (2015, 2017). He leads an EPSRC Programme Grant and a major programme of translational research funded by Find a Better Way, a charity focused on helping civilians affected by landmines.
Manuel works on material-based strategies for tissue repair and regeneration, and engineers in vitro 3D models to understand physiology, disease and as platforms for drug testing. His group is within the Centre for the Cellular Microenvironment, a cross-college multidisciplinary initiative that he has set up together with other colleagues. Together with key local and international collaborators, his group addresses a broad range of topics within this field, including the design of advanced biomaterials/biointerfaces, growth factors and their interactions with the extracellular matrix and stem cell engineering. He targets translational research to address unmet clinical needs such as bone regeneration in critical size defects as well as radical new approaches to control stem cells using synthetic biology.
