The University of Glasgow has taken a leading role in researching transatlantic slavery and acknowledging the financial benefits that slavery provided to our university in the past. We have teamed with the University of the West Indies to form a new Glasgow-Caribbean Centre for Development Research (GCCDR), one focus of which will be to investigate and develop public understanding of the history and social impact of transatlantic slavery. To this end, we are recruiting a scholar in Transatlantic Slavery Studies with a developing research profile, excellent teaching and communication skills and the ability to foster and sustain collaborative partnerships with external parties for research and knowledge exchange.

The successful candidate will pursue ambitious research, grant capture and publishing in the subject area; support outreach and public engagement activities relating to Slavery Studies, working with the GCCDR; contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching (solo and team taught) on the slave trade and plantation slavery for programmes including the MA (Hons) in History, the MSc in History, a new MSc in Global History and a proposed MSc in Reparatory Justice.

You will join a highly motivated and expanding Slavery Studies team in Glasgow's History subject area in the School of Humanities. This team is already pursuing a range of initiatives to engage with the history of slavery and its legacies, promote the diversification of the curriculum, and foster new collaborations with local and global communities, with strong and committed support from senior management. History at Glasgow is a large subject area with over forty scholars covering medieval, early modern, modern and global history, with strengths in Scottish history, war studies, gender history, oral history, and religious, social and cultural history.

Glasgow has a strong interdisciplinary ethos, with research centres bringing together staff to create new perspectives and insights, as exemplified by the GCDDR. We offer excellent support for research, grant capture, knowledge exchange and public engagement activity and continuing professional development, including the allocation of workload for the pursuit of a Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education Practice.

This is a permanent, full-time Research and Teaching position, available at grade 7 or 8. It is the University of Glasgow's mission to foster an inclusive climate and equality in our working, learning, research and teaching environments. We welcome applications from under-represented groups in academia, including BAME colleagues and women. We strongly endorse the principles of Athena SWAN, including a supportive and flexible working environment, with commitment from all levels of the organisation in promoting gender equality.
