A new global history of slavery, featuring an article on Liberia by centre member Christine Whyte, will be published on 16 September.
This exceptionally ambitious work presents the history of slavery from prehistoric times to the present in an accessible form. It appears twenty years after the adoption of the Taubira law. The history of slavery is here placed at the heart of global history. The book renews a comparative approach in the study of the phenomenon of slavery, which takes the reader from ancient India to the Antilles of the eighteenth century, from Han China to colonial Brazil, from medieval Egypt to contemporary Uganda. Far from trivializing the monstrous singularity of colonial slavery resulting from the transatlantic slave trade, the comparison helps to shed light on it. With more than 50 authors of 15 different nationalities. Epilogue by Léonora Miano, writer and essayist. Conclusion by Orlando Patterson, sociologist and professor at Harvard University. Project management: Paulin Ismard, historian, professor of ancient history at Aix-Marseille University. Coordination: Benedetta Rossi, historian and anthropologist, professor at University College London, and Cécile Vidal, historian, director of studies at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales. With the support of the Foundation for the Memory of Slavery.
