Abstract:

David Alston will introduce his recent book Slaves and Highlanders: Silenced Histories of Scotland and the Caribbean (EUP, 2021) and illustrate the approach he has taken by presenting the ‘micro-histories’ of a number of enslaved Africans in Berbice (Guyana), where they worked under the control of Highland Scottish plantation owners. These will include three Africans; one given the name Inverness, who for a time regained his freedom and lived as a Maroon; Archy, who came to Belladrum in the Highlands in 1810 and in 1813 helped to plan an abortive uprising in Berbice; and Susanna, whose sons attended Marshal College in Aberdeen.

Speaker Biography:

Dr David Alston has researched Scottish involvement with slavery over many years, being the author of several notable articles on the subject and his new book, Slaves and Highlanders: Silenced Histories of Scotland and the Caribbean (EUP, 2021).
