Prof. Marc Desmulliez, FInstP, FIET, CEng, CPhys, is Director of the Research Institute of Sensors, Signals and Systems (ISSS) of the School of Engineering of Engineering & Physical Sciences (EPS) at Heriot-Watt University, Scotland, UK. Under his leadership, ISSS recently got the best UK Electronic Engineering Department in Electronic Systems Award by the National Microelectronics Institute (NMI). MD is also the Director/Founder of the MIcrosystems Engineering Centre (MISEC) (www.misec.hw.ac.uk/), with over 25 PhD students and Research Associates and research turnover of ~£1M p.a., making it one of the UK’s largest MEMS academic research groups in its field. He previously led the £4.2M EPSRC-funded 3D-Mintegration Grand Challenge project (EP/C534212/1) and sits on the Executive Committee of the Innovative Electronics Manufacturing Centre (EP/H013014X). He is also a founder of Microstencil Ltd, a spin-out company established in Singapore which recently transferred its stencil manufacturing technology to the multinational company DEK under the DEK platinum brand. Prof. Desmulliez established also the first UK Master of Science in Microsystems Engineering in 2001. MD has held grants of compounded value of more than £12M.

His research interests include MEMS design, manufacturing and test, packaging, microsystems for biomedical applications. His interest has turned recently to advanced manufacturing technologies, more specifically the understanding and translation of natural processes to manufacturing, an arguably new topic of research in engineering.
