Bio

My role involves supporting the UK environmental science community in projects where radiocarbon analyses are used either as a tracer of environmental processes or to build chronologies. My particular areas of expertise lie in the uses of radiocarbon within gas (CO2 and methane), and waters (Dissolved Organic and Inorganic, plus particulate C), to track and trace C sources in natural and polluted systems. I develop new methods in these fields, for example, the ability to analyse 2H, 13C and 14C of methane from a single sample. Along with this, I use material such as carbonates (e.g. shell) from coastal and estuarine environments to collaborate with researchers studying factors such as sea-level rise, and how corals respond to global climate change. This is highly collaborative, and I support projects from Facility users in a very wide range of geographical locations around the world, from sample collection to data interpretation and publication.

I am always interested in new collaborations and in developing new approaches to radiocarbon analysis for the UK and international community. I am also very happy to hear from potential students and colleagues who would like to ask about these areas.
