SUERC is home to state-of-the-art analytical technology, used to address major issues in environmental, earth and life sciences. We host several national Facilities for NERC.
Our students are trained to become experts in analytical science, and benefit from access to the wide range of equipment and technical expertise. We have strong links to science research at the Universities of Glasgow and Edinburgh, and host many visiting international researchers.
Study Options
- PhD: 3-4 years full-time; 6-8 years part-time; Thesis of Max 80,000 words;
- MSc (Research): 1 year full-time; 2 years part-time;

Nuclear Waste Services (NWS) PhD Scholarships at SUERC
Nuclear Waste Services (NWS) are investing in research relating to the development of a Geological Disposal Facility for radioactive waste.
It is essential that the sub-surface environment where a GDF will be located is characterised and how the surface environment could change during its lifespan is investigated.
We currently invite applications for two fully funded 4-year PhD scholarships:
- Isotope Toolkit for Saline Groundwaters (IT4SG)
Supervisors: Fin Stuart (SUERC) and David Banks (University of Glasgow). - Climate Change Impacts to Marine Ecosystems in UK Regional Seas (CLIME)
