Work in Glasgow is ongoing to manipulate metabolic pathways in a range of organisms for production of biofuels, antibiotics, and other high value products. Other work concentrates on artificial photosynthesis, and improved waste and water treatment.

Water/Waste Treatment Researchers in Glasgow are using Synthetic Biology for novel treatments of water supply and waste water treatment. Energy could be recovered from the waste stream, and organisms could degrade waste while producing high value products. In another approach termed biodesalination, engineered photosynthetic bacteria remove salt from sea or brackish water so it can be used for agriculture, industry or for drinking water. |
